Two-fer Tuesday: Socks in the Garden

International Mismatched Sock Day(for me this is 365 days a year)Despite there being only one of me living in this house, I still manage to end up with an odd sock out every now and then. I have a small basket where I put the lonely little fellow, hoping that his mate will materialize someday (preferably NOT on the back of my shirt), but there are some socks that have been in the basket for a lonnng time. They need to move on to a new gig. Since I’m not a fan of this look, and I already have plenty of sock dustcloths (slip them on my hands and dust-dust-dust!), the current crop of “lonelies” are headed outside:

From Repurposeful came this helpful idea:
Slip a bar of soap into a sock, knot the open end, and tie to an outdoor faucet to clean up before going inside.

Cut old socks into strips and use for garden ties. I used to cut up old pantyhose for this purpose, but since I haven’t owned a pair of pantyhose since the 90s, I now use old socks. They work just as well and somehow seem less…intimate than nylons. The tomatoes don’t seem to notice the difference.

I’m 85% certain that the mates of these socks will show up the minute I re-use them and I’ll have a fresh supply. Any ideas for more uses for old socks?

  1. I also have a surplus of unmatched socks at home. The idea you’ve shared can help me, I now have good use for these items.
